  • King coconut water is a popular functional beverage characterised by excellent nutritional properties, and rich in sugars, vitamins, minerals and amino acids with immense therapeutic value (Shubashree, et al, 2014)
  • King coconut water is rapidly absorbed via the intestines due to its higher osmolality, mainly governed by carbohydrates and minerals. Therefore, it is a good source of blood-sugar restoration and hunger management in place of artificial beverages high in sugars and harmful additives

  • Due to the lability of fresh tender coconut water, commercial coconut water products are stabilised blends of a variety of waters to achieve marketability and wide product acceptability of taste and odour
  • Coconut water is regarded as a juice, and is subject to the Codex Alimentarius General Standard for Fruit Juices and Nectars
  • An important requirement that has significant bearing on authenticity is that ‘the brix level* shall be that of the fruit and the soluble solids content shall not be modified, except by blending with the same kind of fruit’ (Para 3.1.1 (a))

* Brix level is the water-soluble sucrose percent by weight (I.e., 1 degree of brix is 1 gram sucrose/100 gram of   solution)
